Despite what Cyndi Lauper sang, it’s not just girls who want to have fun. According to data from Spherical Insights, the Global Amusement Parks Market was valued at $51.46 billion in 2022. The data also projects this sector of the entertainment industry to experience a 4.8 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) through 2032, bringing its total value to nearly $88 billion. And that’s just one sector of the leisure and recreational industry! Zoos, casinos, museums, and countless other establishments provide fun and entertainment for the masses… and they all need signage to keep guests informed and the business orderly and profitable.
Amusement parks, theme parks, and water parks, by their very nature, are fun and incredibly busy places. With so many people gathered in a relatively small area, chaos definitely has a chance to ensue. An easy way to help prevent it and promote orderliness is through the use of illuminated signs — and this can be achieved in several ways across the park. First, these parks can enhance the visitor experience by installing LED signs at entrances and exits. Full-color, dynamic message signs can welcome guests to the park, provide guests with park and safety information, and create an overall inviting atmosphere. Enter/Exit signs, or Red X/ Green Arrow signs placed at ticketing booths and kiosks, show guests where to purchase tickets and, when installed over park gates, indicate which lanes are open/closed or are being used for entering and exiting the park.
Once in the park, guests can be guided to the park’s rides, attractions, and features using more of the previously mentioned illuminated directional and wayfinding solutions. Customized illuminated signage for difficult-to-navigate or high-traffic areas is also an option. Once guests reach their desired attraction, illuminated recreational signs can further enhance their experience and assist park staff. For instance, a Red/Green indicator light can be placed at the beginning of a ride or waterslide, indicating to staff it’s safe for the next group of riders to proceed. Variable message signs can also be used after a ride or attraction to thank guests for their patronage or indicate the winner of a competitive attraction, such as a water slide race. Finally, vibrant illuminated signage can direct guests who have worked up their appetites to concession areas for all the food and drinks the park has to offer.
Perhaps even more chaotic than amusement and water parks are casinos. These indoor monuments to gambling are chock-full of people, shining lights, and loud noises and are often combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shops, and other tourist attractions. And there is no doubting their popularity. According to the American Gaming Association, more than 102 million adult Americans (around 41 percent of the population) visited casinos for gambling or entertainment purposes in 2021.
Just like at outdoor amusement parks, illuminated recreational signs play a pivotal role in creating an easily navigated and welcoming environment within casinos. LED signs can be placed at casino entrances and exits so patrons can easily find them. Illuminated signage can be strategically placed to provide wayfinding solutions to different areas of the casino, including gaming tables, high-limits areas, slot machines, bars, lounges, restaurants, shops, pools, spas, ATMs, and, of course, cashier stations. Within the casino, full-color dynamic messaging signs can be used to promote events, display restaurant specials, alert patrons of jackpot amounts at different games of chance, and thank them for visiting.
Illuminated signage isn’t just for amusement parks and casinos. These signs can be utilized in virtually any place where people go to seek leisure and recreational activities and entertainment, including, but not limited to:
